Rhapsody

The starting point for the work was the Monument to Frédéric Chopin in the Royal Łazienki Park, though it was not the figure of the composer himself that interested me, but rather the willow tree behind him. I was not interested in illustrating the motif itself, but in attempting to capture something that remains invisible and immaterial – the movement of air, rhythm, and tension. The title Rhapsody refers to a form that unfolds intuitively, through returns and inner impulses, rather than through order or symmetry. I thought of the sculpture as something woven – out of air, sound, or gesture. The sculpture is set on a base of Calacatta Viola marble, creating an internal contrast. The selected fragment of stone, almost entirely devoid of its characteristic veining, remains muted and restrained – as if refusing the expressiveness commonly attributed both to the material itself and to the rhapsody as a form.
